What Keeping It Clean Costs Across a Year
A maintenance wash starts at 60 pounds and multi stage correction with coating runs from 1,500. The annual figure depends on which of those a car actually needs.

Detailing is the one running cost where the range is set by ambition rather than by the car. UK prices run from about 60 GBP for a maintenance wash to 500 and above for multi stage paint correction with a ceramic coating, and a full detail is published at 250 to 800. What separates a 600 year from a 3,000 one is how often correction is bought rather than how expensive the car is.
The service tiers and their prices
| Service | Price | Frequency it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance wash | from 60 | regular |
| Full detail | 250 to 800 | once or twice a year |
| Paint correction package | from 375 | occasional |
| Professional paint correction | from 750 including VAT | occasional |
| Ceramic coating package | from 525 | every few years |
| Multi stage correction with two year coating | from 1,500 | every two years or longer |
| Paint protection film package | from 1,200 | once, then 5 to 10 years |
Three realistic annual patterns
Nothing above is a yearly figure on its own. What produces an annual number is a pattern, and three of them cover most owners of a car in this class.
| Pattern | What it includes | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | four maintenance washes at 60 | 240 |
| Typical for a stored car | two full details at 300 | 600 |
| Driven and kept sharp | six washes at 60, one full detail at 500 | 860 |
| Correction year | two details at 300 plus correction from 750 | 1,350 |
| Reset year | multi stage correction with two year coating | 1,500 and up |
The 600 figure corresponds to a pattern owners describe in practice: a full service twice a year covering wash, decontamination, clay, polish and sealant. Against the annual cost model calculated elsewhere on this site, where a 250,000 car came to 23,397 a year at low mileage, 600 is 2.6 per cent and even a 1,500 reset year is 6.4 per cent.
Why correction is the line that varies
Washing removes contamination. Correction removes paint. That single difference explains both the price gap and why correction cannot be an annual habit: every multi stage correction takes a measurable amount of clear coat off, and clear coat is finite.
Two consequences follow for a car of this value:
- Correction is a repair, not a maintenance item. It should be triggered by the paint's condition rather than by the calendar, and a car that is washed properly needs it rarely.
- Preventing swirl marks is cheaper than removing them. Almost all of the defects that correction fixes are introduced during washing, which makes the cheapest line in the table the one that decides whether the most expensive one is needed.
That is also the argument for a coating or film after correction. Both preserve the corrected finish, at a published 525 and 1,200 respectively as package starting prices, and both make the next correction later rather than sooner.
The stored car case
A car kept in climate controlled storage at 15 to 20 degrees and under 60 per cent humidity accumulates very little of what detailing removes. It needs the surface kept in condition and it does not need a correction cycle, so the 240 to 600 band covers it comfortably.
The larger figures belong to cars that are used, and on those the calculation runs the other way: the paint is exposed to what road use does, and the correction that follows is the cost of having driven it. Both outcomes are reasonable and they are not the same budget.
Questions readers ask
How much does professional car detailing cost per year?
On published UK prices, from about 240 a year for four maintenance washes at 60 each, to 600 for two full details at 300, up to 1,500 and above in a year that includes multi stage correction with a ceramic coating.
What does a full detail cost?
Published at 250 to 800 GBP. That covers a thorough clean and protection rather than paint correction, which is priced separately from 375 as a package and from 750 including VAT for professional correction.
How often should paint correction be done?
As rarely as the paint allows. Each multi stage correction removes clear coat, which is finite, so it should be triggered by condition rather than by the calendar.
What causes the damage correction fixes?
Mostly washing. The swirl marks and light scratches that correction removes are largely introduced during cleaning, which makes careful washing the cheapest way to avoid the most expensive service.
Is it worth adding a coating afterwards?
It preserves the corrected finish, which is what was actually paid for. Ceramic coating packages start from 525 and paint protection film packages from 1,200, and both push the next correction further out.
What does a stored car need?
Far less. A car kept at 15 to 20 degrees with humidity below 60 per cent accumulates little of what detailing removes, so 240 to 600 a year covers it, against a larger figure for a car that is regularly driven.
