Extended Warranty: What It Covers and What It Leaves Out
Ferrari cover can run to year 15 and McLaren to year 12, both renewed annually against an inspection. The terms decide the value, and one gap in the published years is worth asking about.
Extended cover on this class of car is not a bolt on sold once. It is an annual renewal that depends on passing an inspection, and the published programmes now reach 15 years from first registration at one maker and 12 at another. What decides whether it is worth buying is not the headline year, it is which components are named and what the renewal depends on.
The Ferrari structure
Every new car carries a three year factory warranty alongside the seven year scheduled maintenance programme. The two are separate: one covers defects, the other covers planned work, and they end in different years.
Beyond that, official retailer material describes a Power extension covering years 6 to 12 on all major components, and New Power 15 running from year 12 to year 15, naming engine, gearbox, PTU, suspension and steering. Each policy is issued for 12 months and renewed annually after a technical inspection by certified technicians at an authorised dealer, and the year 12 to 15 cover can be renewed annually for three years.
Two features are unusual and both favour the owner of an older car. The extension is available on pre owned cars subject to technical checks, and it is available on cars where extended cover was never taken up or where there are gaps in the coverage. A lapsed history does not permanently disqualify a car.
One gap is worth naming rather than glossing: the published descriptions run factory cover to year 3 and start Power at year 6. What covers years 4 and 5 is not stated in that material, and it is a question for the dealer rather than an assumption to make.
The McLaren structure
New cars carry a three year warranty with unlimited mileage, alongside a ten year unlimited mileage anti perforation warranty on the body. What makes it worth the price
The published material does not give renewal prices, which are quoted per car, so the arithmetic has to run the other way: what does it take for the cover to pay.
Set against the repair figures published for this class of car, a single covered failure clears a lot of premium. A clutch on a 458 is 7,000 to 10,000 USD at a specialist, brake discs are 5,000 to 12,000, and a gearbox or engine item is a larger number than either. - What the renewal depends on. An annual inspection at an authorised dealer is both a condition and a cost, and a failed inspection is an unplanned repair bill arriving with the renewal.
- What is excluded. Wear items are outside every programme of this kind. Tyres, pads, discs and clutches are the most frequent large bills on these cars and they are not defects.
The resale effect nobody prices
Cover attaches to the car, so a seller who renews before a sale hands the buyer a documented position rather than a question. On the Ferrari side the same is true of the maintenance programme: a car sold in year four still carries three years of scheduled work.
